Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #5. Draw an Imaginary place, adding all kinds of details. Aim for accurate perspective. Due: Thursday 5/26.
Week of May 9th
Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #4, Draw a still life scene using Expressive line. Due: Friday May 13th Shading and or color shading should be done by increasing expressive line use in more darkly shaded areas. Expressive line: Lines used to convey movement or mood. Characteristics include energetic, quick changes in direction, expressive use of light and dark. Do not forget to include a surface on which the objects are sitting.
Week of April 4th
Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #3, Due Friday, April 8thth.
Create a drawing of at least 3 eggs and part of the carton in which they are sitting. Fill the page well and show strong technique for smooth directional shading. You can use a Q-Tip or a finger to carefully smooth tonal transitions.
Week of March 14th
Wednesday: On YouTube, search CJHS Drawing Exploration to find our class page. View the Value Exercise Page 1 demo and follow directions for correct tonal shading. Use pencil control and vary pressure to create SMOOTH CONTROLLED ACCURATE VALUES, based on 5 step value scale you established in the first section.
Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #2, Due Friday, March 18th. Create a drawing of an old shoe or sneaker using contour line only. The shoe should fill the page to create interesting composition, and should have some representation of a surface on which it is sitting.
Make sure you are using controlled, long flowing Contour lines to showing the separations and representations of the areas of tonal variations as well as the folds and creases created by the shoes contours.
Week of February 29th
Students will work on Sketchbook assignment #1, Due Friday, March 4th. Draw 3 objects that represent you as a person. Find objects that you have that could represent your hobbies, athletics, music, dance, games, art, etc. Please do not include your iPods, or cellphones as any of these 3 examples. Set the objects up in a space and draw them from observation, develop techniques of shading and a strong sense of space to develop good composition.
Week of February 4th
Students will have Class Contract/Blog Contract and Contact Information sheets signed and filled out by Friday, February 5th for credit. Students and Parents who would like to use the Remind.com feature should follow directions on the handout given. Supplies for class can be picked up this weekend or over the course of next week. (You will not need to bring your art supplies or sketchbook to class everyday, although you should always have your pocket folder for keeping handouts.)
Week of January 11th
Students will work on Sketchbook # 7. This assignment is to be done from a selection of your choice from the list given on the assignment sheet. Make sure you are filling the space well and using techniques to make the drawing have a finished appearance. This is due Friday, January15th.

Week of November 30th
Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #5 Draw a scene from a point of view from either very high (looking down) or very low (looking up). This is a study using forced perspective angles. It asks you to study your subject carefully and recreate the selected vantage point with accurate (distorted) perspective.

Week of October 19th
Students will work on Sketchbook Assignment #3, Draw a still life scene using contour line only, no graphite shading. Due,Thursday, October 22nd for Period 3&4

Make sure your use of contour line follows the defiition of "long FLOWING gestural marks used to define areas of light and dark. OFTEN LOOKING LIKE CONTINUOUS LINE." One object in the still life should be colored and shaded using colored pencil techniques to create a focal point. Make sure you are establishing the appearance of a ground (a surface) which the objects are sitting on and fill the space of the page well.

Students will work on completing Stained Glass Journal assignment to be turned in on Friday, October 2nd.
Week of october 5th
Sketchbook #2 Students will work on Sketchbook assignment #2, Draw a group of houseplants using Contour Line only. Due, Friday October 9th. Show line accents to help differentiate between edges and possible tonal areas. Fill the space well and make sure you include the surface the objects are sitting on and possibly the area in which they are sitting. If you do not have any houseplants at home, work from a photo reference that you take first (if possible), that way you are making the compositional choices based on scale and point-of-view. If you cannot work from your own photograph you can work from one you find on the Internet and print. Please include the printed image with the drawing when you turn in the assignment.
Students should study for Line & Value Quiz on Friday, March 28th. Look over line Notes, definitions of Structural, Contour and Expressive. Students should be able to recognize these types of lines and their characteristics. Study Vocabulary of Value as well as Line Groups used to create Values. Handouts are available to download from the handouts page under the Drawing Exploration tab on this website. Line and Value Quiz- Students should look over the vocabulary information on notes sheets. Study definitions for 3 types of line, Contour, Structural and Expressive. Students should be able to recognize these types of line as well. Value notes include definitions and techniques discussed on Value notes handout. These include recognizing line groups used to create values. Handouts are available on the "Handouts" page to Download if you don't have your notes to study from.
week of april 29th
Due to NJASK testing this week, there will be no sketchbook assignment due. Students will work on their Colored Pencil Masterpiece exercises. Follow the color scheme types written in the margins for each of the quadrants of the image. ALL AREAS OF THE EXERCISE NEED COLORED PENCIL GRADATIONS TO RELATE TO THE LIGHT SOURCE. Assignment Due Friday, May 3rd.
Continue to work on your Final Exam study guide. The topics on the sheet can be reviewed in whichever way you feel most comfortable studying. My recommendation is the Read, Write and Recite method.
